Discussion : Permissionless Expansion of Ghosts World/Fragments : Anecdote

Title : Permissionless Expansion of Ghosts World/Fragments : Anecdote

Abstract

This agenda suggests the idea of settling the precise direction where GhostsProject DAO should head to by expanding the story of Fragments, which is the backbone of entire GhostsProject world, through the DAO structure that enables (thanks to blockchain) permissionless participation of community members who want to contribute and become part of the story.

Motivation

Decentralization is inefficient from nature as it chooses three core values of censorship resistance, trustlessness, permissionlessness over efficiency ; thus it requires clear answer of why we need decentralization and how we are going to utilize these core values.

DAO is new form of organization that leverage these core values of decentralization in order to build entity/community where governance (decision making process) is not owned by centralized group of people but open to everyone who has aligned vision. But other than literal and conceptual definition of DAO, the practical term and execution/operation process of DAO has been largely undefined and tend to be somewhat ceremonial term as many projects choose DAO as their organizational structure but ended up neglecting specific justification of โ€œwhy it has to be in decentralized formโ€. GhostsProject was no exception from it. Well, more precisely we did have โ€œWhy it has to be DAOโ€ but has been lacking of โ€œso how we are going to do itโ€.

After many trials and experiments since the birth of DAO, there was one clear agenda aroused that needs to be resolved ; โ€œso why really DAO?.

Fostering art and encouraging community participation in executing this in DAO form is โ€œideally greatโ€ but the questions are โ€œis it worth it to choose DAO structure with this somewhat vague established goal?โ€, โ€œCan this be in other organizational structure?โ€.

Without answering this questions and settling more specific direction/goal of DAO, โ€œDecentralizationโ€ is just great ceremonial post (Clarification, this is not the problem that only GhostsProject is facing but many other DAOs do).

Permissionless Expansion of GhostsProject Fragment : Anecdote

I would like to propose for DAO to focus on expanding the story of Fragments, the backbone and history of entire GhostsProject world.

Unlike traditional IP structure where fans/community are passive entities when it comes to the expansion of IPโ€™s story as there is no permissionless and trustless entry point, under DAO structured IP can provide the environment where community can have a say and total soverignty on the world of their favorite IP.

As GhostsProject has the concrete world based on Fragments that is undoubtably one of the most comprehensively structured story in Web3, applying DAO structure to give community sole power to control this story by expanding and deciding the branches of it through Ghosts NFT can create vicious cycle that leads to richer and more innovative contents of expanded Fragments which can attract broader audiences into Ghosts community, which will eventually increase the value of Ghosts NFT as governance token and art itself.

One of the example is recent Mr.Onedayโ€™s art โ†’ GIP 29 : 5-cut cartoon to bridge inbetween ghosts project and the burning soul

Community participation isnโ€™t the new concept but blockchain enables the concept even a step further.

One of the great example that we can refer to is โ€œSCP Foundationโ€.

SCP Foundation is simply a fictional secret organization where its world is fostered by collaborative-writing wiki. First launched back in 2008 and being operated for 15 years, SCP foundation and its community has been expanding its world through community driven writings/tales including many diverse genres such as horror, science fiction, fantasy, and etc.

Fans/community can write and create on SCP Wiki, which is the lending page for SCP foundation and available in 16 languages, not only limited to the written stories but in various form of media such as comics, video games, and animated short films.

Why SCP Foundation has been successful and sustainable with community engagement?

  1. Ceative Freedom: Contributors have a wide latitude to create content, as long as they adhere to the established lore and guidelines. This fosters a sense of ownership and engagement among community members.
  2. Collaborative Environment: The wiki format allows for collaborative writing and editing, with an active forum for discussion, feedback, and improvement of the content.
  3. Decentralized Governance: The SCP community operates with a decentralized power structure. Although there are administrators and moderators, the community as a whole has a significant say in major decisions.
  4. Strong Cultural Foundation: The SCP Foundation has a rich and expanding lore that provides a cohesive thematic base for contributions, enhancing continuity and the shared universeโ€™s believability.

I believe that GhostsProject already satisfies #3 and #4 with DAO Voting System and Story/Culture that have been built through Mr.Misangโ€™s art and community driven events.

What we have to do in order to fulfill #1 and #2 is that defining structure that artists and community can permissionlessly participate in the expansion of Fragments by amplifying their creativity and collective effort.

How?

Fragment is currently made of total 187 cuts where each of them is unique NFT. Detailed visual or front end UI of how expanded Fragment will be exhibited is tbd but we can imagine a structure something similar to this.

image

Other than defined story of 187 cuts in Fragments, any artists can create additional cuts for Fragments and upload a proposal for their cuts to be official part of Fragments. More precisely, those cuts are not to be included in between existing Fragment cuts but rather becomes branch of Fragments and become official โ€œanecdoteโ€ of ghosts world. Something like this,

For example, Mr.Onedayโ€™s art Economist Ghost can be one of the official ghost character/persona that has his own story and anecdote within the GhostsProject World. As more artists participate in this process, we end up getting more branches and Ghosts World become more richer/vibrant.

Yes, this is very roughly drafted idea and more details need to be discussed such as the onboarding / voting process of Fragment expansion arts, website rebranding, and etc. However, if we can settle the clear direction of how GhostsProjcet DAO can utilize the enriched Fragment, I believe it can be one of the most recognizable and sustainable cases within NFT/Art scene.

Please share your thoughts what you think on this idea and any further ideas are welcomed.

Simply we are strategically pivoting to unlock the full potential of our ghost PFPs. Our overarching goal is to enrich our fragmented narrative, which demands a dedicated platform for art exhibition and community revitalization. While Discord offers flexibility, the need to attract and engage a broader spectrum of artists calls for a more sophisticated, professional platform, like a custom-designed website. This shift is not merely aesthetic but functional, facilitating a comprehensive restructuring of our DAO to focus singularly on narrative enrichment.

In parallel, we are re-evaluating our marketing approach, especially within the nuanced Web3 space where traditional tactics falter. Our strategy will evolve to prioritize forging meaningful relationships with artists and immersing ourselves in the art community, bridging the gap between Web3 innovation and Web2 familiarity.

Acknowledging the complexity of enhancing community engagement within our DAO, we understand this is not uncharted territory. However, its successful execution hinges on meticulous planning and targeted execution.

Here are the lists that we should or could be our strategy

  1. Platform Development and Integration
Building a bespoke, interactive website that not only showcases art but also fosters community interaction and story development.

  2. DAO Restructuring
Aligning our DAOโ€™s structure with our strategic goals, focusing on narrative expansion

  3. Marketing and Community Outreach in Web3 and Web2 Crafting a dual-channel marketing strategy that leverages the strengths of both Web3 innovation and Web2 outreach to build a diverse, engaged community

  4. Artist Engagement and Collaboration
Establishing synergistic partnerships with artists, creating a collaborative ecosystem that contributed to and benefits from our evolving narrative.

  5. Community Participation Enhancement
Developing initiatives that actively involve our community, encouraging participation and feedback to shape the direction of our DAO.

Each of these strategies is designed to interlock and reinforce one another, creating a cohesive, dynamic environment where art, story, and community coalesce into a vibrant and sustainable ecosystem

concerns

  1. Platform Development Risks

    • Technical Feasibility
Developing a sophisticated, user-friendly platform can be technically challenging and resource-intensive. Ensuring robustness, scalability, and security are key concerns.
  2. DAO Restructuring Complexity

    • Restructuring the DAO to focus on narrative expansion requires careful governance planning to ensure that decision-making remains efficient and democratic. also there is a risk that not all DAO members will agree with the new direction. Mitigating this requires transparent communication and possibly some form of consensus-building or voting mechanism
  3. Marketing Strategy in Web3/Web2

    • Navigating Dual Channels
Web3 and Web2 marketing strategies can be complex. There is a risk of diluting the brand or confusing the message if not executed cohesively. Also determining the return on investment for marketing efforts, especially in the relatively uncharted territory of Web3, can be challenging.
  4. Artists Engagement and Collaboration

    • Aligning Interests
Ensuring that the interests of the artists algin with the DAO can be challenging. Thereโ€™s a risk that artist collaborations might not always seamlessly integrate with the DAOโ€™s objectives
    • Intellectual Property Concerns
Collaborating with external artists raises questions about ownership and rights over the created content
  5. Community Participation Enhancement

    • Engagement Fatigue
Continuously engaging the community without overwhelming or fatiguing them is a deliciated balance. Catering to a diverse community (old/new community) means acknowledging and addressing varied interests, which can be logistically and strategically challenging.

Action Plan

  1. Platform Development and Integration

    • Employ experienced web3 developers and use proven tech
    • Launch a beta version for community feedback
    • Provide tutorials and support during the transition phase
  2. DAO Restructuring

    • Develop clear governance protocols and decision-making framework
    • Host AMA sessions or Q&A forums to address concerns
    • Facilitate a voting process for major decisions to ensure democratic involvement
  3. Marketing and Community Outreach in Web3 and Web2

    • Develop distinct strategies for each channel with unified branding and messaging
    • Regularly review and adjust strategies based on performance metrics
  4. Artist Engagement and Collaboration

    • Create guidelines and agreements outlining collaboration expectations
    • Involve artists in the planning stages to ensure alignment with DAO goals
    • Develop clear contracts addressing IP rights
  5. Community Participation Enhancement

    • schedule events and initiatives strategically to avoid overwhelming members
    • provide varied and dynamic engagement opportunities
    • develop specialized sub-groups or committees focusing on different interests

Itโ€™s open to discussion about this agenda. To increase the โ€œFragmentsโ€ ecosystem, there can be various ideas from all of our community. Setting up a specific direction can help us drive a positive endeavor. One of the councils, Iโ€™d like to add my thoughts and what I can contribute to this value. Also, it can be an activity from our community. Not only councils but also holders can add meaningful value through those various actions.

CommunityOperations: As a community council, I aim to engage in basic community management activities, including information transfer through study rooms, encouraging proposal creation and voting, sending reminders, and providing operational support when new fragments or derivative works are introduced.

Research or Writing some posts: I would like to do research that combines experiential insights gained from actual operations with perspectives from other researchers. By synthesizing research papers from various sources and incorporating visions presented by other DAOs, I aim to produce a comprehensive document(If possible). This endeavor not only serves as a career incentive but also results in a tangible output that contributes to the body of knowledge. Despite my limited understanding of DAOs, the absence of universally accepted โ€œbest practicesโ€ or strict guidelines suggests abundant opportunities for exploration. I believe this applies not only to DAOs but also to NFT projects. Undertaking even small initiatives and experiencing processes firsthand can be a valuable asset. The opportunity to create meaningful outcomes through such endeavors is truly remarkable.

Partnerships: Ongoing collaboration with external entities and projects remains a priority. I plan to participate in business meetings and explore avenues where partnerships can provide mutual benefits. Additionally, I am open to taking a more proactive role in driving activities if there are opportunities to improve outcomes or achieve specific KPIs, especially during challenging periods.

Conference Hosting: Continuing our efforts to enhance public brand awareness, I aim to organize conferences at least once a year. Although facing challenges in securing speakers and market status, I think it can make wide awareness of our brand to the public if we can host a global-based conference or offline event. To increase more and more, if there is a specific need and opportunity, I am determined to gradually establish a foundation for appealing to global users. My goal is to participate in a big event such as NFT NYCโ€™s side event next year, positioning it as a stepping stone for global expansion.

I agree with the rough plan mentioned above as expanding and spreading the Fragment worldview ultimately contributes to enhancing the value of โ€˜ghostsprojectโ€™
However, as Tony mentioned, there are various factors that need to be carefully planned and considered in advance, therefore, I believe it should be implemented only after obtaining comprehensive information and establishing a suitable schedule.
As a member of the council, I think my role in expanding the Fragment worldview is to create an SNS account of the Fragment worldview to raise awareness among artists and ordinary people.
I have been consistently posting Fragment-related content through the ghostbar Twitter account, but it has not yielded the desired results due to two main reasons.

  1. Due to the sluggish NFT market, the Twitter account has had limited exposure
  2. The majority of the accountโ€™s followers are NFT enthusiasts

So I would like to increase Fragmentโ€™s exposure by utilizing Instagram, a popular platform among artists. I believe that this endeavor will eventually contribute to attracting more artists to participate in the expansion of Fragment.

There can be some concerns and unpredictable problems, but basically I love this idea.

A lot of artists created lots of artworks for GhostsProject at several contests before but I felt those artworks were gone(forgotten) because there is no specific way to archive them. I think we can โ€˜archiveโ€™ new artworks related to a very specific narrative through this plan.

Yes, I think this is a plan to expand FRโ€™s story, and also a plan to publicly archive the works of the authors participating in the expansion.

Artists attract more artists. Sometimes their fans will also follow us through this plan.

*And more than anything, I think the expanded FR will be very beautiful. It may not be possible to accurately predict its shape. I think it will be a huge collage intertwined with narrative, or a refined form of chaos.

A story that expands infinitely. Thatโ€™s what we need in the long term.

DAO works well in many cases.

If some people withdraw 90% of the initial fund and call it a DAO with remaining fund, itโ€™s has an issue with motivation and justification to run a DAO.

Itโ€™s also another problem when theyโ€™re not admit that it happened.

For many DAOs, no matter how big their size is, works though they start without a fund, because of volunteers and donations.

In some cases, like the Nouns DAO, it works well because they manage their Fund transparently.

Donโ€™t talk about the failure of a project as if itโ€™s a failure of the DAO structure.

And whales of GhostsProject, including Mr.Misang and MYTY, they got the most votes because of they bought bunch of ghosts due to early dayโ€™s hacking event. Arenโ€™t they are the ones took the most of funds earned from the mint?

I remember back then I pointed out fund moved out from the initial vault.

The team said itโ€™s because of they have to pay tax and all that but those funds never came back.
